Carol Danvers Multi-Media:

Bio:

Carol Danvers is an Airforce officer when exposure from an accident with Mar Vell turns her into a super kree/human hybrid.  The accident gives Carol the same amazing powers as Mar Vell (The original Captain Marvel at least within Marvel). Carol uses her military skills and new super powers to become a super hero.

Over the years her character has come in and out of publication.  She has enjoyed increased popularity over the past decade being a critical character in some of Marvel's big events like Civil War and Secret Invasion.  She currently has taken on the mantle of Captain Marvel and has been making cameos in the current Guardians of the Galaxy series.

Super Hero Name:
Carol initially calls herself Ms Marvel but has changed her name a few times, she has been called Binary, Warbird and currently holds the mantle of Captain Marvel.

Powers:
  • Carol is very powerful her powers include:
  • Super Strength, Durability, and speed
  • Impervious to poisons and toxins
  • Can fire energy blasts from hands
  • Can fly at 6 times the speed of sound
  • Has a sixth sense that gives her limited precognition
  • Can absorb and release energy (Though not magical energy)

Controversy:

Ms Marvel was the first female character at Marvel to be a gender bending clone of a male character.  There was a variety of criticism of the character for being nothing but a female version of Mar Vell.  These female versions of popular male characters had been popular with DC for a longtime.  Feminists critics have attacked the practice because the character created tends to be nothing but a copy of an already existing character and because the Male character was first they tend to take on a secondary position, side kick, subservient position to the male character.

Ms Marvel stories elicited even more controversy after she was the focus of a bizarre storyline involving an alien villain named Marcus.  In the story Ms Marvel is brain washed by Marcus and has his child, who then grows into an adult version of Marcus.   At Earth at the time Marcus tells the Avengers he is bringing Ms Marvel back into space.  Ms Marvel still brain washed agrees.  The Avengers though slightly shocked let the two go without a fight.  Critics of the story line  point out that by Marcus brainwashing Carol he robbed her of her will.  He was in effect raping her, and the Avengers basically condoned his actions.

Later writers have tried to address these complaints.  First the Marcus story was altered out of existence by famous X-Men writer Chris Claremont.  2nd Carol has grown in importance and now has taken over the name/mantle of her male counterpart and is now called Captain Marvel.  This would be the equivalent of Supergirl taking over the name Superman, or Batgirl taking over the main Batman name.

NOTE: It has been pointed out in the comments that this is a bit unfair to DC.  Captain is a gender neutral description, while  Batman uses the male description of man in the name.  It would thus sound off to call a female by the name Batman as opposed to Batwoman.  Either way it is still a big deal.

MCU:

Carol Danvers has yet to appear in the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe).  On October 28th, 2014, Marvel announced Carol Danvers will have her own movie under the moniker "Captain Marvel".  The movie will be released July 6, 2018.

Images of Brie Larson on set:

Brie Larson has been seen sporting a green and black Captain Marvel suit.  While generally Captain Marvel is thought to have been in Red, Blue and Yellow outfit certain Captain Marvel's have worn a green costume notably Genis Vell.  The original Captain Marvel was Mar-Vell and while his costume changed overtime his initial suit was also green.  It seems likely that this suit harkens back to the original Captain Marvel suit.

Brie Larson Announced:
San Diego Comic Con 2016 it was announced that actress Brie Larson will play Carol Danver in the Captain Marvel film.  Brie Larson is previously known for playing  Envy Adams in Scott Pilgrim vs the World and as Kate the rebellious daughter in the show United States of Tara.

Brie Larson was announced during a huge Marvel panel that included all of the Marvel actors at San Diego Comic Con 2016.

The Toronto Film Festival Brie was asked about the importance of playing Captain Marvel and said that:
"I have very specific reasons for doing film, and they don’t have to do with me or getting my face plastered on more objects. It’s about the material. And movies live on and can be places I can’t, and I want to be conscious about what it is that I’m presenting to the world, and what those representations of life are, and how they’re being shared. And obviously Marvel is such an incredible platform to be able to share in storytelling… I think what ‘Captain Marvel’ represents, and what this film is shaping up to be, has a message that’s undeniably important to the world right now."
In a separate interview at Toronto Film Festival
"The thing that’s been the most exciting now is on social media I get sent a lot of pictures of young girls in the Captain Marvel costume and I’m excited to see more of that. She’s such a great symbol for young girls, and realizing what a deficit we have, that we don’t have more of those. I think it’s really cool to see a girl in a Batman costume or a Spider-Man costume, but I’m really excited that there’s a symbol of women. I think that’s really important."

Bushwacker Bio:

Carl Burbank is a disillusioned ex priest who deserted his vows after suffering through drug induced deaths of many of his young parishoners.  Feeling he was ineffective to change the world he joined the C.I.A. which experimented on him and him a cybernetic arm.   He worked for the C.I.A. as an asassin an agent bneath the codename of Bushwacker until he eventaully left to become a freelance mercenary.

One theory is that the CIA did not experiment on Bushwacker but that his powers are due to him being a mutant.  If this is true Bushwacker hid this fact, as he entered battle against many heroes due to his anti mutant attitudes.  He began hunting down and killing mutants both for himself and for contracts.  He was hunted down and stopped by Wolverine and Daredevil and in the process baddly burned his face.  Wolverine was hunting Bushwacker due to his anti-mutant killings and Daredevil had been hired to help Carl Burbank by his wife who was worried about him.

Bushwacker was among a group of villains brought together to bring down Daredevil by Typhoid Mary.  In the end this group is defeated by Daredevil.

Bushwacker was beaten by the Punisher and left for dead after taking a contract from the Kingpin.  Buschwacker's wife finally left him during this story causing him  even more emotional damage.

He was later hired by a drug kingpin Nick Lambert to kill reporter Ben Urich.  However after learning the about the drugs Bushwacker sided with Ben.  Bushwacker remains highly against drug lords after his early origins as a priest.  He allowed Ben's story to go to print exposing Nick Lambert.  He then hunted down Nick after he bribed himself out of jail and killed him.

A rogue Doombot by the name of Mechadoom began hunting down various cyborgs including Misty Knight and Bushwacker.  These cyborgs were all freed after the intervention of Deathlok.

After escaping from the Raft he was hired by the Jackal to kill Punisher but was defeated by Daredevil.  Bushwacker was used by GW Bridge in an incident to lure out the Punisher.  It worked but the trap failed to capture the Punisher and Bushwacker was placed back in jail.

He served the Hood's Criminal Syndicate in the events of Secret Invasion, Dark Reign and Seige.  He was seemingly killed by Wolverine after fighting against X-Force however he appeared to be alive in the story of Civil War II where he is encountered by Kingpin.  He seems to be currently living in San Francisco.

Bushwacker Skills and Powers:

Bushwacker has special bionic arms and hands that can alter themselves quickly into various types of guns and even a flame thrower.  As a gun it can turn into mulitple guns or single large barrel weapons, it can act as a machine gun, or as a shot gun.  He has also been shown as being able to fire concusive blasts and turn the arm into a blade.

In order to load his arm guns Bushwacker must swallow the ammunition or fuel.
He is a highly trained assassin and martial combantant

Bushwacker Artwork:
My favorite Jim Lee Punisher cover heavily features Bushwacker standing over the Punisher.

MCU:
Bushwacker has not yet appeared in film or in TV in the MCU.

Critical Role: Legend of Vox Machina Animated Special Kickstarter going Crazy!!!!!!!

The Kickstarter for Critical Role's Vox Machina Animated Special has already been an insane success.  It has been rocketing upward so fast that it has been hard to pin down where this will end up.  With that we are updating this post with the latest news and figures as they come in.

Update: 3/7/2019
The campaign has now crossed $5.8 million which puts it ahead of the Veronica Mars Film Kickstarter at 5.7 million.  Now only one Kickstarter the Mystery Science Theater 3000 that raised 6 million is ahead of the Critical Role campaign.  By crossing over 5.7 million the first Briarwoods stretch goal has been hit which means 2 episodes of the Briarwoods saga are also now funded to be made.  You can learn more about the Briarwoods story arc on the post below.

What is the Briarwoods story arc?

Critical Role released the update:
It’s official: the Briarwoods are coming to animated life in The Legend of Vox Machina!

Thanks to YOUR incredible support, we’ll be able to begin the Critter-favorite Briarwoods arc featuring the infamous Sylas & Delilah Briarwood — starting with episode 3!
2 new episodes means 44 new minutes of animation from the stellar team at Titmouse, and we can’t wait to see these characters and stories immortalized in animation.
Matt and Travis have a few words to share about our new stretch goals, what we’re planning on doing with this incredible opportunity, BRIARWOODS HYPE and what to expect next from CR Land.
So, to recap, here’s what you can expect episode-wise from The Legend of Vox Machinaanimated SERIES:
Episodes 1 & 2: A brand new story centered around Vox Machina at level 7 (FUNDED!)
Episodes 3, 4, 5, 6: Briarwoods arc! (FUNDED!)
Episodes 7 & 8: Continuation of Briarwoods arc (Stretch goal: $7.5M)
Episodes 9 & 10: Continuation and conclusion of Briarwoods arc

NEXT UP: if we hit $7.5M, we’ll add 2 MORE episodes to the Briarwoods arc! PLUS, another one-shot for everyone to enjoy -- a Vox Machina Guest Battle Royale, featuring a veritable who’s who of Tal’Dorei’s spectacular supporting cast!
In case we haven’t said it enough, THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts for helping us make this cartoon magic happen. We really couldn’t do it without you.

Critical Role

Update 3/6/2019
Another day another update.
The campaign is sitting 5.1 million getting very close to the level of the Veronica Mars film raise on Kickstarter of $5.7m.  As the campaign already blew away the initial stretch goals the Critical Role team the team has come up with adding more episodes to their initial special.

Here was the update on the stretch goals as they stand now:

BIG ANNOUNCEMENT #1: WE’RE TURNING THIS ANIMATED SPECIAL INTO A SERIES!
So far, you amazing folks have funded FOUR episodes of The Legend of Vox Machina, which means our little animated special has polymorphed into an animated series!

As a quick refresher: the first few episodes of our animation will focus on a brand new Vox Machina adventure, which takes place before our show began streaming live on Twitch. But because of your incredible generosity, we’re following your lead and going for it, diving right into a series that begins the retelling of the saga of Vox Machina. We can’t wait to show you how the story shapes up!
BIG ANNOUNCEMENT #2: BRIARWOODS ARC STRETCH GOALS!
The Briarwoods arc is one of the most exciting and popular storylines of the Vox Machina streaming campaign. When we were brainstorming about what might come next, the clear winner was introducing the Briarwoods into The Legend of Vox Machina.
The story so far… Vox Machina arrive in Percy's hometown, Whitestone, to avenge the murder of his family and the corruption of his city at the hands of the evil Briarwoods. Danger and betrayal lurk around every corner, and it will take all of Vox Machina's abilities to combat this deadly threat. The Briarwoods arc began in episode 24 of our first streamed campaign, and remains one of our absolute favorites.

For every stretch goal that we hit, we’ll be able to create two additional 22-minute Briarwoods arc episodes.
BIG ANNOUNCEMENT #3: NEW ONE-SHOT STRETCH GOALS!
Bringing the Briarwoods to life in animation isn’t the only stretch goal reward that we’re offering. We have TWO very special one-shots planned if we hit our last two stretch goals, including a battle royale featuring some of our favorite Critical Role guests from the Vox Machina campaign, AND finally… drum roll… the one-and-only Ashley Johnson will (FINALLY) DM a special Critical Role one-shot!
We really cannot believe that we’ve already made it this far together. We can’t thank you enough for all of your support, kind words, and contributions to our campaign to date.
To paraphrase our own Travis Willingham, LET’S SEE HOW HIGH THIS ROCKET CAN GO!

Update:  3/5/2019
It is a bit wild to already be updating a post after one day but the Vox Machina Kickstarter deserves to be updated.    You can find my original post below.  Yesterday I made a prediction that it could potentially hit 4 million.  I figured the kickstarter would start to slow down.  Well.  It kept going and going and already one day in is at 4 million.  Checking this morning the Kickstarter had $4,214,411 pledged and 31,642 backers.

Here is the Critical Role team responding to the amazing funding.

The Kickstarter did so well that CNBC actually covered it.  I think it is pretty funny when something in the D&D universe does so well that the mainstream news covers it.   The Critical Role team deserves all the credit for this by consistently churning out an authentic and fun product week after week.

At its current pace the Vox Machina is expected to break Kickstarter Records.  I think this kickstarter is history in the making and may become a new way of launching shows from creator owned sources.  According to Fortune the preview two highest Kickstarter's ever were Mystery Science theater at 6 million and the Veronica Mars film at 5.7 million.  At its presence course the Critical Role Kickstarter will easily exceed both of those projects.  According to Fortune:

The special could come close to the nearly $6 million raised in 2015 for a new season of Mystery Science Theater 3000, which is still the most-funded TV or movie project in the site’s history. MST3K is followed by the $5.7 million raised in 2013 for Veronica Mars film.
I think Fortune and myself continue to under estimate this show and community.  I now think its not only going to meet the 6 million mark but blow it out of the water.

There are currently comics on Amazon you can buy of Vox Machina as well.

Original Post 3/4/2019
I am a Critter! Critter being a fan of the show Critical Role.  Critcal Role is a show of voice actors that have taken to playing D&D on Thursday nights and releasing it out to the world.  I tune in and watch their shows on Thursday night and enjoy their antics.  While I have an idea that I am not alone its always hard to pin point exactly how many fans they have.   I am constantly surprised by the pull of this show.  At last year's Denver Comic Con I was thrilled to see tons of Critical Role cosplay and gushed at it evertime.  I was like cool there are more Critters out there than I thought.

But now the true pull of the show may be shown through a kickstarter to create an animated version of the show.  They are asking for 750 thousand to create a cartoon of the show.  Some of the shows creators include voice actors for many popular kids cartoons shows and they are said to have pitched it to studios before settling on this method.  Some may consider it daring to go after a 750 thousand dollar raise on Kickstarter.  That said their confidence in their show and community have apparently very much paid off.

The Kickstarter has just started and has already blown way past the 750k amount and is already close to hitting the 2 million mark.  I am actually afraid that by the time I post this it will hit that mark because its going up that quickly.  They hit 1 million in 1 hour.  The campaign already has 14,591 individual backers.  All that and the campaign has 45 DAYS to go.   My guess is that this may fund a lot more of this animated version of critical role than anyone initially could have guessed.  I am sure the Critical Role team hoped they could hit 2 million but I doubt any thought they could do it almost instantly on the first day!

You can check it out yourself at:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/criticalrole/critical-role-the-legend-of-vox-machina-animated-s?ref_tag=thanks_tweet

I personally love to see this.  By the Critical Role team choosing this way of funding they maintain control of what they have worked hard to create.  I think they deserve so much freaking credit for what they have done with the show and with D&D as a whole.

The Critical Role team is already gushing on the internet.......as they should be:

I really think this campaign is kind of a game changer and is going to make history in a lot of ways.  I will provide updates as it goes along.  Not sure where it stops but at this point I think it could easily hit 4 million.  That may end up being a very low estimate as it could end up hitting that amount by the end of the day.  Maybe 10 million?  How does one even begin to guess where this thing ends up.

One thing is for sure!

Good work Critters!  You are great fans.

Who is the Kree Supreme Intelligence?

The Kree Supreme Intelligence is a Marvel character.  The Supreme Intelligence is an artificially constructed mind made up of supercomputers and a collection of best minds of the Kree empire.  It initially was created as a tool to be used by Kree leaders but eventually usurped control of the empire for itself.   Annette Benning is said to play a version of the Supreme Intelligence in the film Captain Marvel.  She will serve as a mentor and leader of the Kree Star Force and of Captain Marvel.

First Appearance: Fantastic Four #65

Species:  Artificial / Kree

Alter Ego: Supremor

Supreme Intelligence News:
Who is Supremor?

Kree Store:
Toylab holds the fervent belief that there are not enough Marvel alien figures so we are thrilled to have see new ones coming out on Amazon to go along with the Captain Marvel film.

Bio:
http://static.comicvine.com/uploads/scale_super/6/62537/1654785-avengers346_06a.jpg

The Kree began to pursue the creation of a Cosmic Cube device.  The Kree's longtime enemy the Skrulls had a Cosmic Cube which they had used to unleash massive amounts of power.  In order to create a Cosmic Cube the Kree set about creating a vast and powerful mind.  The began collecting brains of their best dead scientists, leaders, and philosophers and networking them in a vast super computer.  This super computer they called the Supreme Intelligence.

Eventually, the Supreme Intelligence eventually gained a will of its own and outright refused to pursue the creation of the Cosmic Cube.  The Cube had been too powerful for the Skrulls and had ended up destroying massive parts of their empire.

The Kree leadership did not shut down the Supreme Intelligence for this act of rebellion but instead let it continue to operate.  The leadership would consult the Intelligence on matters when necessary.  Overtime the influence of the Supreme Intelligence grew.  It was consulted more and more until eventually it outright usurped the governmental powers of the Kree empire.  The Supreme Intelligence has a massive, and fanatical following amongst the Kree populace.

At times Kree leaders or other alien empires have wrested control away from the Supreme Intelligence but it has generally maintained its over the empire.

The Supreme Intelligence realizes that the Kree species have a hit an evolutionary dead end and much of its focus becomes integrating dynamic alien genes into the Kree genome or other ways of jump starting the Kree evolutionary process.  It is through this focus that the Kree began to explore Earth and have contact with its heroes.

Initial, contact with humans first occurred when the Kree experimented on them to create Inhumans.  When the Inhumans rebelled the Kree gave up on the project.  Later, the Supreme Intelligence sent Ronan to kill the Fantastic Four who it deemed a threat.  Through its study of the Fantastic Four and of Rick Jones it learned that the human race had great evolutionary potential called the Destiny Force.  For this reason various Kree agents have been sent to Earth such as Mar-Vell and Doctor Minerva.

During Operation Galactic Storm the Supreme Intelligence released a massive weapon upon its own people called the Nega-bomb  The Nega-Bomb wiped out around 70% of the Kree Empire but the Intelligence hoped it what jump start the evolutionary process.  The Avengers themselves took note of the devastation and sought to eliminate the mind for its crime of genocide.  The Supreme Intelligence would spend time as a prisoner, and time deposed when the Shi'ar took control of the empire.  However, the Intelligence plotted its way back into control using its android self known as Supremor as a mole.

In the story Infinity, the Supreme Intelligence along with Ronan were shown as the representatives of the Kree empire on the galactic council.

Powers:
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gpWuJFV5OII/UUcJqb6gZCI/AAAAAAAAPmU/OBnhusYfKBY/s1600/quasar+issue+4+003.jpg
Being made up of a vast cybernetic computer and a collection of the greatest Kree minds the Supreme Intelligence is hyper intelligent with more brain power than that collectively on Earth.

The Supreme Intelligence also can create android that are connected to it that are called Supremor.  There have been 3 of these serving androids shown operating at once.

Other Powers:
  • Telepathy
  • Telekinesis
  • Precognition
  • Post cognition
  • Cosmic Awareness
  • Reality altering capabilities
  • Energy and Matter manipulation

MCU:

Annette Benning is said to play a version of the Supreme Intelligence in the film Captain Marvel.  She will serve as a mentor and leader of the Kree Star Force and of Captain Marvel.

It is not known whether the Supremor will also be mentioned as Supremor was more like the avatar of the Supreme Intelligence.  The Kree Supreme Intelligence is suggested to be behind some of the powers and origins of the MCU version of Captain Marvel.

Some of the background around Annette Benning's seen appear to be in a Tron like landscape where their are digital pillars of information suggesting that Carol Danvers may be visiting her inside a computer with an avatar of herself and the Supreme Intelligence meet.

What is the Briarwoods arc in the Critical Role Kickstarter

The Critical Role Kickstarter for the Vox Machina Animated Special blew away its initial projections and is now headed toward making Kickstarter history.  The initial stretch goals of the campaign did not predict the level of success that the campaign has already had.  The team quickly began creating new stretch goals to reflect the success the campaign has had and provide new goals for it to reach.  You can follow the Kickstarter on  the post below:

Critical Role Legend of Vox Machina Kickstarter set to break Kickstarter records

On top of adding new episodes onto the initial special the new Stretch Goals are to create an animated version of the Briarwoods story arc.  Many fans of the Critical Role season 1 will be thrilled by the news of animating the Briarwoods arc.  Some who have not seen that part of Season 1 may likely be asking the question?

What is the Briarwoods arc?

The character Percival aka Lord Percival Fredrickstein Von Musel Klossowski de Rolo III played by Taliesin Jaffe was introduced as a noble who had fled a violent coup.  He believe himself to be last surviving member of his family after an evil couple called the Briarwoods took over his family's kingdom of Whitestone.

This story begins to be explored further in Episode 24 The Feast.  This episode kicks off what is called the Briarwoods story arc that introduces the Briarwoods as major villains.   They are an evil couple that will stop at nothing in the pursuit of power.   Sylas and Delilah Briarwood are from a different land called the Dwendalian Empire where they were kicked out for dabbling in necromancy.  The couple then organized a brutal coup of Whitestone and killed most of the ruling family the de Rolos.

The Briarwoods in varioius ways maintain their villainious status throughout Season 1.  The entirety of the arc is full of plots, schemes and surprises that I do not want to spoil here.  I especially do not want to mention the major big bad villain that the Briarwoods have a tie to.  You can start learning about the Briarwoods yourself by watching Episode 24 or if the Critical Role Kickstarter continues to get funded you will be able to watch an animated version of it.

The Incredible Hulk #419 the first appearance of Talos

Welcome to a From the Vault this is a series of posts on the Toylab blog where we pull out comics from our Vault to find those hidden gems that many have forgotten about and draw attention to how awesome they are.

This comic is Incredible Hulk #419 and it features a battle between the Hulk and a new villain Talos the Tamed.  The book is not worth very much I picked up a good copy for a few dollars as is typical for a lot of the books printed in the 90s.  However, it is awesome and does have a historical importance being the first appearance and origin story of Talos.

Writer: Peter David

This book is awesome in a lot of ways that current books fail to be.  It really impresses me that it has a fully contained story in this one little book.  There are social interactions, humor, romance, action, and a beginning, middle and end all self contained in this one comic.  It is written by Peter David one of the top writers in the comics industry in terms of volume.  I think David is now in the top 10 of most proflific comic writers of all time.  What is good about that is, on top of being proflic he is also very good.  The dude knows how to tell a comic story, how to break it up, balance it and pull it altogether.  Incredible Hulk 419 is a very good example of Peter David in action.  Lets just take a moment to appreciate how many comics Peter David has written and how wealthy that makes us all that these books are out there.

This book does feature my least favorite version of the Hulk, aka Professor Hulk.  This Hulk stays in Hulk form but has the full mental capabilities of Bruce Banner.  This Hulk then to me becomes a bit like Super Man or even Beast from the X-Men.  This period represents Hulk at his Heroic functioning best and this story also finds a way to use that in a unique way.  This story is an example of using his mind to outsmart an opponent rather than beating them senseless.

Talos the Tamed is a character that appears and his origin told through this comic.  After appearing in the comic he has gone on to appear in the Annilation event and later made a villainious appearance in a Howard the Duck comic.  Not a major Skrull villain perse but he is still pretty cool with ties to Hulk, Nova, and Howard the Duck.  Talos here reveals his history as a Skrull with deformity of sorts.  He lacks the ability to shape change like other Skrulls.  He tells Hulk that if he was not noble of birth he would have been killed as a child.  However, he went on to become strong, martial and brutal despite his hardship.  He became one of the major Skrull warrior leaders in the Skrull Kree war.  However, during the war, he lost and was captured.  He was expected to kill himself but instead refused.  This brought shame upon himself.  Now wearing a mantle of shame calling him Talos the Tamed he seeks death in battle.  He has hunted down the Hulk in order for the Hulk to kill him in battle.  However, professor Hulk upon learning the aims of Talos refuses to fight him.  Instead, Professor Hulk begs for Talos to leave him alone.  The begging of Hulk shames Talos and Talos returns to his ship.  The Skrulls warriros on the ship had watched the battle and congratulate Talos as a hero.  It seems the battle had undone the shame of Talos.   Hulk smiles smiles knowingly, and pleased with himself that he outsmarted Talos and at the same preserved the Skrull warrior's life.
