New D&D book the Ghosts of Saltmarsh

Coming May 21st is a new Dungeons and Dragons Fifth Edition book that focuses on the sea.  The company previousily released an unofficial rules in their Unearthed Aracana section called Of Ships and the Sea that I have been using to set up some Ocean fairing adventures for the Companions of the Silver Apple with.  I would highly recommend checking out the Unearthed Arcana as I have found it very useful in setting up the stats and lore of a few ships.  I will release the stats and lore of some of the ships of the Companions of the Silver Apple campaign later so stay tuned for that.

The new book promises to bring not just ship and ocean rules though but also will bring a variety of sea adventures from the past system to the current 5th edition rules.  This does not appear to be a book with a long campaign style adventure but rather a menagerie of ocean adventures like an ocean version of Tales of the Yawning Portal.  That said the description does say that DM's can run the full Saltmarsh adventures like a full campaign.  My guess is that most will pull from it as needed for an ocean adventure.  The bulk of these adventures come from the Dungeon Magazine back in Dungeons and Dragons first edition.

The book also comes with details and make up of the port town of Salt Marsh which can be used as the staging ground for the included adventures.  It also comes with its own magic items and monsters.

The book looks awesome I can't wait to read it and do a full review of it.

Description of new book from Dungeons and Dragons:

ADVENTURE ON THE HIGH SEAS

Explore the waves above and the fathoms below in these watery adventures for the world’s greatest roleplaying game.

Nestled on the coast of the Azure Sea is Saltmarsh, a sleepy fishing village that sits on the precipice of destruction. Smugglers guide their ships to hidden coves, willing to slit the throat of anyone fool enough to cross their path. Cruel sahuagin gather beneath the waves, plotting to sweep away coastal cities. Drowned sailors stir to unnatural life, animated by dark magic and sent forth in search of revenge. The cult of a forbidden god extends its reach outward from a decaying port, hungry for fresh victims and willing recruits. While Saltmarsh slumbers, the evils that seek to plunder it grow stronger. Heroes must arise to keep the sea lanes safe for all.

Ghosts of Saltmarsh combines some of the most popular classic adventures from the first edition of Dungeons & Dragons including the classic ‘U’ series, plus some of the best nautical adventures from the history of DungeonMagazine:

  • The Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh
  • Danger at Dunwater
  • The Final Enemy
  • Salvage Operation
  • Isle of the Abbey
  • Tammeraut’s Fate
  • The Styes

All adventures have been faithfully adapted to the fifth edition rules of Dungeons & Dragons. Furthermore, this book includes details on the port town of Saltmarsh, as well as plenty of adventure hooks for each chapter. Play through the whole story in a seafaring campaign leading characters from level 1 through level 12, or Dungeon Masters can easily pull out sections to place in ongoing campaigns in any setting. The appendices also cover mechanics for ship-to-ship combat, new magic items, monsters, and more!

“The Saltmarsh series consistently ranks as one of the most popular classic D&D adventures,” said Mike Mearls, franchise creative director of D&D. “With its ties to ocean-based adventuring, it was an obvious step to augment it with additional sea-based adventures and a robust set of rules for managing a nautical campaign.”

Hoist your sails, pull up anchor, and set a course for adventure!
