Who is Finn Cooley?

Finn Cooley is a villain of the Marvel anti-hero the Punisher.  Cooley appears in Daredevil Season 2 and is played by actor Tony Curran.

First Appearance:  Punisher #7 (Volume 6)

Punisher Villain bios are typically pretty short.  They run into the Punisher and that is that.  Cooley does have some history though.  That is what happens when you have stories told through the eyes of a lethal anti-hero.

Finn Cooley is a former IRA soldier / terrorist.  For 7 years he ran a unit of IRA soldiers in Derry.  While setting up a bomb at a Belfast police station he makes a mistake and the bomb goes off early.  The explosion badly burns Finn's face making so that he must wear a plastic mask to keep his face together.   After the blast he is caught and put in jail for 5 years.  He is released as part of a Good Friday agreement between the British Government and the IRA.

After being released Finn sets off for the United States.  In the USA Finn meets up with another Punisher adversary an arms dealer named Nesbitt.  He maintains an arms length business relationship with Nesbitt and exchanges guns and drugs.

Finn attempts to gain Nesbitt's fortune after the criminal passes away.  He sets a bomb to kill off those who would inherit Nesbitt's wealth.  The bomb puts Cooley directly in the sights of the Punisher.  He is killed by a bomb.that goes off too early.

Finn Cooley appears in Daredevil Season 2 where he tortures the Punisher.

Cooley arrives after the Punisher has killed many of the Irish gangs of NYC.  Amongst the dead is the son of Finn Cooley.  The Irish gang had been lent 1.2 million by Cooley and this money was taken by the Punisher.   After killing the former leader of the Irish gang, Cooley sets out to

The Punisher learns that Cooley was part of the deal at the park where his family had been killed.  He frees himself from his bonds after being heavily tortured by Cooley.  He shoots Cooley twice in the back and demands to know more about his family's death.

Punisher:  "Now I can ask you face to face, whose the guy who did it? Who killed my family?"
Cooley: "Your family? Who cares?"

Cooley is seemingly killed by a gunshot to the face by the Punisher.

Venom #5 Damn! Next level Badassery

I have been liking a lot of the new Marvel books and some of the directions they are going in.  The Cosmic Ghost Rider and Thanos series in particular were really well done.  However, the Venom series has really caught me off guard with where it went, and just how damn good is it.  Donny Cates is Marvel's best writer right now, and he is throwing down with Venom.  This book takes your expectations devours them, takes the scraps and sews them together with barbed wire before injecting them with napalm and dropped a nuke on them.  Nothing I said makes sense.  But you still just read it, because it sounded pretty damn awesome.  Venom #5 Makes No sense, and it does not matter, it is bursting with awesome.  Why does Venom have.......Crap......How do I even talk about this without spoiling it.  But yeah Venom gets wings, that is one of wild things that happens.

This is the best Venom series ever and that is coming from a fan of the 90s Venom series.  This series though it just hitting the main chords of the character while also delivering crazy unexpected notes.  Next level Bad Assery Delivered!

Venom #5 is the top pick for this week!

However, Venom 1-4 were also stellar.  I think a lot of people have missed this series.  Don't.  Go out and get it.

Deadpool or James Bond in Secret Agent Deadpool #1 Preview

Secret Agent Deadpool slipped past me.  Deadpool has become a bit like Wolverine in the early 2000s and he has so many comics that I begin to lose track of them.  However, when he fits into a concept right those comics can quite good.  This idea of combining Deadpool with a James Bond esq Secret Agent is unique and really seems to fit with Deadpool well so I am putting this comic on my list of books to watch.  At the very least it should be fun.

Shatterstar gets a Solo series

Fresh off making his first film appearance in Deadpool 2 Shatterstar is going to get his own solo series.  I do still need to do a From the Vault of New Mutants #99.  I have the comic literally sitting out on my coffee table ready to reviewed.  It should be a great review as that comic while often overlooked has a lot of amazing stuff in it, including the first appearance of Shatterstar.

Going to come out and say it.  I really dig the idea of a Shatterstar solo series.
Shatterstar is a weird character, I hear that a lot like it is a slam on him.  Its true, he is weird but sometimes weird is interesting and entertaining.  He is also in my opinion completely unique.  I can not think of any character quite like him.  Another cool thing about this series is that Tim Seeley is writing it who does excellent horror and weird style stories.   In the news from Marvel Seeley says: "My interest in him now is more in the ‘hardboiled noir’ aspects of the character,” and Marvel goes on to compare the story to John Wick.  A noir John Wick story for Shatterstar can we get a HELL F$^##ing YES! Come on this is going to be good.

I am not sure what direction he will go in exactly but I have a feeling it will be worth its cover price.

And Yes I am working on that New Mutants #99 review.

Shatterstar's new look.  Tim Seeley has been teasing both a mystery villain and a new gunslinger like look for Shatterstar.

Riktor who is Shatterstar's sometimes boy friend is also being redesigned for the series.

Liefield the creator of both Deadpool and Shatterstar has said he likes the design.

More on the comic from Marvel.

Press Release from Marvel.com

Tim Seeley and Carlos Villa tell a new Shatterstar story starting this October!

On October 3, the mutant called Shatterstar decides to go it alone.
A gladiator, a warrior, and a Super Hero…Shatterstar has been many different things, but throughout it all, he’s always been deadly. This fall, enter the darkness with SHATTERSTAR #1!
Written by Tim Seeley with art by Carlos Villa, the limited series will be a new birth for the long-beloved character. “I was 12 years-old when I first saw Shatterstar in the pages of NEW MUTANTS, and I was the perfect age to be intrigued by him,” the writer explains. “The dude’s an alien gladiator! And within pages of us meeting him, he stabs himself with his own swords in order to kill the bad guy standing behind him.”
Seeley’s perspective on the character has evolved since then, and it seems that very evolution may be a focus of the new series. “My interest in him now is more in the ‘hardboiled noir’ aspects of the character,” he says. “He’s this guy whose life was violence for sport—and now he’s trying to move on from that. But it’s such a thin thread that keeps him in this new line of lawfulness, and it’s an easy one to break.”
What was Seeley’s pitch for this new book? “When the life he built crumbles, Shatterstar is forced to ask himself if he truly ever gave up the gladiator ring. The series will be part John Wick, a dash of Will Eisner’s A Contract with God, and infused with lots of lots of interdimensional X-Men Super Hero mythos.” Speaking specifically about that X-Men lore, Seeley says he was inspired by classic ’80s and ’90s X-Men stories: “I really stuck close to the Fabian Nicieza, Rob Liefeld stuff—especially those last few issues of NEW MUTANTS where you can see the purest form of this guy. I also really leaned on the LONGSHOT limited series by Ann Nocenti and Art Adams, as well as the ‘Shattershot’ storyline from the old X-Men annuals.”
Shatterstar has been many different things. On October 3, discover who he is now as Tim Seeley and Carlos Villa present SHATTERSTAR #1!

Prince of Orphans - Marvel Martial Artist

Who is the Prince of Orphans

The Prince of Orphans is a Marvel character known for being an experienced, moral and powerful member of the Immortal Weapons.  As an Immortal Weapon he is on of the greatest martial artists in the world with added on powers.  He has lived for a long but unknown amount of time and over that long history he has been both an ally and enemy to multiple Iron Fists.

Name: John Amman

Alias: Prince of Orphans, Green Mist of Death

Home: Z'Gambo (Jungle mystical city that appears in Africa)

First Appearance: Immortal Iron Fist #8 (2007)

Easy boy.  I've got you. Now listen.  I'm going to teach you something about having a code. (Prince of Orphans as said to Davos in the tournament)

Toylab Kung Fu Store:

John Amman also known as the Prince of Orphans is one of seven Immortal Weapons who represents the city of Z'Gambo.  His true origins are shrouded in mystery.  Like the other Immortal Weapons he is a fierce martial artist and has the added ability to alter his form into a green mist.

Earliest known mentions of John Amman come from WW2.  It is known that he fought alongside both Captain America and John Steele.  John Steele is the super soldier predecessor of Captain America and its possible that the Prince of Orphans fought alongside him in WW1.  This is never made clear and John Steele also fought in WW2 so either war represents a potential meeting place for the two warriors.

Orson Randall and the Seven Stolen Coins
Orson Randall was an Iron Fist who refused to battle in the Tournament of Heavenly Cities.  Instead, he stole 7 coins belonging to the 7 Heavenly Cities.  Orson had his reasons for believing that something was sinister was going on.  He suspected that the coins were evidence of someone traveling between Earth and the 7 cities outside of the ordered times where the cities appear on Earth.  John Amman / Prince of Orphans was ordered to pursue Orson Randall and retrieve the coins with extreme prejudice.  Unaware of the potential corruption that Orson had discovered he pursued him for many years.  The Prince of Orphans was more powerful than the young Iron Fist so when ever he caught up to Orson, Orson fled.

Along the way Orson creates a group of adventurers called the Confederates of Curiosity.  These adventurers help Orson unwind the conspiracy in the cities of heaven but also come into conflict with the other Immortal Weapons that are hunting for Orson.  The Confederates manage to elude the Prince of Orphans when they first meet which greatly frustrates the Prince of Orphans.  On the 2nd meeting the Prince of Orphans baddly wounds one of the group, Chores MacGillicuddy.  The Prince allows Orson to heal Chores stating that he has no desire hurt any of the Confederates.  However, he warns that from that moment on any who stand with Orson will be treated as enemies.  Only a young Wendell Rand who wishes to become the Iron Fist himself follows Orson.

The Prince of Orphans then tracked down Orson at Castle Frankenstein where he interupted a bizarre scene.  Apparently, Wendell had been shot and Orson had brought the boy to Frankenstein for surgury.  However, Frankenstein had turned on the pair and sought to take over Orson's body for himself.  The Prince of Orphans then killed Doctor Frankenstein.

The Prince then took Wendell from Orson saying that Orson deserved to be alone for punishment of his crimes.  He promised to heal Wendell.  The Prince of Orphans also took back the coins but is taken aback some by Orson's warning.  Orson chastises the Prince of Orphans for blindly following orders and to begin asking questions.  Notably, how the coins left the 7 Cities of Heaven in the first place.  Later this leads the Prince to discover he was taking orders from far darker forces than that of Orson Randall.

The Prince of Orphans is summoned to the tournament of the Seven Cities where he represents Z'Gambo against the other Immortal Weapons.  The winner of the tournament's city is allowed to appear every decade as opposed to every 5 decades.

Initially the Prince of Orphans is set to battle Fat Cobra in the tournament.  However, the Prince asks if he can battle Davos instead after witnessing the bout between Davos and Tiger's Beautiful Daughter.

In the tournament Tiger's Beautiful Daughter faces Davos the Steel Phoenix in the first round.  She cuts off Davos's hand in the battle and appears to have defeated him.  Somehow though Davos regrows his hand, and unleashes a violent storm of blows upon brutal blows on Tiger's Beautiful Daughter he does not stop dropping blows even after she was clearly beaten.  He is eventually pulled off of Tiger's Beautiful Daughter by his own father the Thunderer.  His actions of nearly killing competitor are against the rules of tournament where the warriors are not meant to turn into murderers.  The Prince of Orphans another Immortal Weapon takes Davos's actions as a grave insult and challenges him in the next round.  Making a point The Prince of Orphans decimates Davos never giving him a chance to land a single blow.  After thoroughly beating Davos the Prince of Orphans tells him that he is going to teach him a lesson about having a code.

Eight City of Heaven
The Prince of Orphans leads the Immortal Weapons against an invading force sent by Hydra.  The Immortal Weapons united together easily defeat the Hydra Mercenaries.  The Weapons discover a map that tells of an Eighth City of Heaven.  They leave to investigate it.  There they are overwhelmed and captured by a force of demons and an Eighth Immortal Weapon.  Tiger's Beautiful Daughter manages to free herself and rescues her comrades. Together they escape the Eighth City.

Ghost Army and Secret Avengers:
The Prince of Orphans stops an ancient army of ghost warriors from entering the world.  He also helps Captain America and the Secret Avengers and Shang Chi defeat Zheng Zu whose followers were attempting to bring him back from the dead using an artifact called the Eyes of the Dragon.

 Powers and Skills:

The Prince of Orphans full power set is partially a mystery.  In general he is depicted as the powerful and experienced member of the 7 Immortal Weapons.  He can transform himself into a green mist.  In the green mist form he can move and strike targets but is difficult to attack.  The mist abilities of the Prince of Orphans may also make him immortal he has lived a long life where he has never been depicted aging.

Mist Powers
-Can move through small cracks, or under doors
-Can allow strikes or bullets to pass through him without any apparent damage
-Can strike quickly from a nearly infinite array of places, and angles.  Any where his mist can go he can attack from.
-Can enter people's body and strike from within them.
-Can enter the land of the dead
-Healing - He has been shown to be able to heal others.  It is unclear if this is related to his mist form or a separate power.
-Immortality- He seems ageless but the extent of this ability is unknown.

The Prince is also very wise and patient.  He is thoughtful and not prone to making knee jerk decisions.  He has little issue with meditating for large amounts of time (In one story 2 weeks on end).

The prince of orphans has shown to strongly avoid killing.

There has not yet been any sign of Tiger's Beautiful Daughter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
