While part of me feels that Deadpool has started to become over saturated in the same way that Wolverine did in the early 2000s I did really enjoy Deadpool: Assassin. This launch of the series combines the old psychotic assassin elements of Deadpool with the creative goofball Deadpool. Making him into more of a likable villain than an Anti-Hero.
Aeon River's Toylab Rating - 8.5 / 10
I give this book a solid rating of 8.5 out of 10. The highest rating I have given to a Deadpool comic in about a year.
Back to the Review
Deadpool is back as an assassin taking contracts from Weasel. Weasel has his own issues going on in the series that are quickly set up in the comic. The personal relationship between Deadpool and Weasel takes a back seat though to the current mission / missions of Deadpool that involve taking out a Samurai and a pack of ruthless mercenaries.
The comic utilizes a multiple flash backs along with the 4 wall breaks that always have the potential to break up the flow of the story and become frustrating but in this issue I felt they really helped created that wonky Deadpool voice.
Yes, there is also plenty of 4th wall breaking in the book such as when Wade stops from his killing spree of battling Ninjas to talk to the reader directly.
Overall if you have been trying to figure out which Deadpool comic to follow this one is my new number one. Cullen Bunn has done a good job of striking a balance with all the Deadpool notes to make something that really sounds like...What ever the heck good Deadpool music sounds like.....Def Leopard meets Beethovin and Run DMC? Heck I'm not touching that. This book is solid. Check it out.
Deadpool’s quest to beat the rest continues, and this time he’s squaring off against the Assassins Guild in the Big Easy! The Merc with the Mouth’s healing factor will get put to the ultimate test when he’s pitted against the knife-wielding speedster called HARVESTER! But even if he’s lucky enough to survive that encounter, Deadpool’s actions in this very comics mag will align more than one ne’er-do-well against him…and Harvester’ll look like a walk in the park!
