Is Rising Sun the biggest board game in years?

Oni of Hate and Oni of Blood.

Update: I have my Rising Board Game and it awesome I have only played twice and lost both times but had a blast with it.  That miniatures are awesome.

Original post:
New big board games have found a vibrant funding ecosystem in Kickstarter where small companies are able to raise money to produce their games before entering production.  The companies have certain rewards they add for buyers who pledge to buy the game based off how much they receive in total.  The more that is pledged for a game the more rewards that are unlocked.  Many games that would never have been given 5 minutes of the major board game companies.  While you may think that would be board gamers would start releasing half thought out ideas and see if they get funding, the real amazing stories belong to games that are fully developed with working prototypes.

Games that hit Kickstarter with art, videos and fully produced components can raise 100s of thousands of dollars or even millions!

This brings us to the new game released by CMON (Cool Mini Or Not) called Rising Sun.  This game put on a "How to do a Kick Starter" clinic.  The game is designed by well known game designer  Eric M. Lang and hit Kickstarter in the teeth with beautiful designed miniatures, game board, and cards.  A video was created highlighting the story of the game  The game is nearly a perfect fit for Kickstarter Rewards with many potential miniatures to use as Pledge Rewards.  Pledge people did and Rising Sun is already one of the biggest hits to come out of Kickstarter with over 2 million pledged as of 3/14/2017.  The Kickstarter still has 20 days to go and has already unlocked all of its rewards.

It will need to raise over 8 million dollars to surpass the highest pledged game in Kickstarter History which was Exploding Kittens.

Bonsai Daimyo, Shinto and Bushi.

The game is set in Feudal Japan which is a time period that everybody loves to play with.  There are never enough Feudal Japan based games especially not enough with cool miniatures.

Top 10 Villains of Daredevil

Matthew Murdoch the devil of Hells Kitchen has been in many battles over the years here are list of his top 10 villain ranked by the bloggers of Toylab.

10) Mysterio
While Mysterio is known primarily as a Spider-Man villain but he went after Daredevil in a major way in a story called Guardian Devil.  In that story Mysterio did everything in his power to make Daredevil feel that he was going insane.  The story is one of Daredevil's best.  Even though battles between Mysterio and Daredevil have been sparse the quality of the story lands Mysterio on the list.

Who is Mysterio

9) Kirigi

The undying Ninja warrior of the Hand named Kirigi has not appeared often but his appearance is always brutal.  Kirigi is the top enforcer of the Hand and even when killed returns again and again to plague the world.

Kirigi was more than a simple Hand Ninja he was a Ninja who could go toe to toe with both Elektra and Daredevil and come out the better for it.

8) Stilt-Man
Stilt-Man may seem like corny villain because he is.  However, Stilt-Man is one of Daredevil's oldest villains and he has returned time and again to battle the Devil of Hells Kitchen.

Various men and women have worn the Stilt-Man suit but Daredevil has taken them all down.  One unique thing about Daredevil is that many of his villains initially appeared in Spider-Man comics.  Stilt-Man is the inverse of this.  He first appeared in Daredevil comics and since has gone on to appear in Spider-Man books.

Who is Stilt-Man?

7) The Owl
The Owl is another old Daredevil villain.  He was also one of the first villains at Marvel to use creepiness as a factor.  He is a character that mesmerizes on the page with his bizarre and eccentrics.

The Gladiator and Daredevil like and respect each other.  They even at times could be said to be friends and look out for each other.  However, when the two battle is punctuated with outright brutality.
Daredevil has many personal bloody battles in his stories both with friends and lovers.

Typhoid Mary

Daredevil has infamously horrible and crazy love life.  Not only do many of the women he loves end up dead, the others end up as his villains.  If there were one character that epitomizes this insanity it is the powerful, brutal, and beautiful Typhoid Mary.

One of her personalities was a lover of Daredevil the other was one of his worst enemies.

4) Elektra

Another Lover turned Villain turned Lover again of Daredevil was Elektra.  Elektra was easily one of the most amazing characters.  Elektra is one of the few fighters in the Marvel universe that can not only hand with Daredevil but also defeat him.  The fact that his feelings are always on a roller coaster with her is another thing she exploits when she chooses too.

Who is Elektra?

3) The Kingpin

The Kingpin of Crime was initially a Spider-Man villain.  He had technological gadgets and gizmos however once the Kingpin became a Daredevil villain he really found his place in the Marvel Universe.  The physically large, mentally intelligent and utterly ruthless Kingpin is the perfect symbol of the brutality of crime on society.

Who is the Kingpin?

2) The Hand

The Hand was initially nothing more than foils for Daredevil in a single story.  However, that story was so popular they have now become fixtures in the whole Marvel universe and battle everyone from Spider-Man to Wolverine.

The dark and evil Ninjas of the Hand are a group that can tax Daredevil's martial capabilities to the max.

The Hand

1) Bullseye
Bullseye is Daredevil's most well known and potentially most evil villain.  Bullseye has different powers that Daredevil but they allow him to hang and battle with Daredevil.  Bullseye has no compunctions about hurting others and will often use that for a strategic advantage in his battles with the Devil from Hells Kitchen.  The one thing that Daredevil has that Bullseye does not is the willingness to sacrifice everything to win.  This has been just enough to tip the scales on more that one occasion in Daredevil's favor.

Miller wrote a much darker anti hero version of Daredevil whose father was abusive.  This Daredevil would use guns when required.  The new dark image of Daredevil stuck and he remains one of the darker characters in the Marvel Universe.  Miller also introduces the Kingpin as the primary nemesis of Daredevil.

In the Miller story Daredevil receives special training from a branch of good ninjas called the Chaste.  The Chaste are a led by a wise, and powerful martial artist by the name Stick.  At one point Daredevil falls in love with another Stick protege the assassin ElektraElektra left the Chaste to join a the nemesis of the Chaste a group of bad ninjas called the Hand.  Elektra is brutally killed by another assassin Bullseye in the well known story of Daredevil #181.  The Hand is reoccuring villain of Daredevil over the years.

Born Again - Top Daredevil Stories

Born Again Story

Born Again is a famous Daredevil story arc in which the Kingpin attempts to destroy the life of Matthew Murdock after learning his secret identity.  It is considered to be by many the best Daredevil Story and one of the top Marvel stories ever.  It is thought that the story will heavily influence Daredevil Season 3 on Netflix.  The end of the Netflix Series the Defenders has a Matthew Murdock laying in bed being nursed to health by a nun.  This is a scene directly taken from the Born Again storyline hinting at where it could go. Another connection with the Netflix shows is that Nuke a villain used in Born Again was introduced in Jessica Jones Season 1.

Born Again is made up of Daredevil #227 through #231.  Often time Daredevil 232 and 233 are added because they resolve some of the loose ends of the story, which makes it a 7 issue story.

The story is written by Frank Miller with art work by David Mazzucchelli.  The story that came out in 1986 featured the return of Frank Miller to writing the character.  Miller had taken a break from the character after making him one of the most popular characters at Marvel during his initial stint. The story is considered one of the best Daredevil stories ever and has even ranked as high as 11 on the all time best Marvel stories list by comic fans.

The Born Again theme of Christianity is heavily used throughout the story with much of the story being about Daredevil's Faith.  While being "Born Again" is generally considered to be a hallmark of some Protestant Sects (Notably Baptists)  the line actually is spoken by Jesus Christ.  It thus a part of all Christian sects with each having their own take on Baptism  In John Chapter 3:  Jesus is being asked about the afterlife by a man named Nicodemus.

Jesus says: "I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born from above, or born again."

Asked by Nicodemus how an old man can be born again. Jesus reponds and clarifies:

"I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit."  In effect Jesus is saying that a person needs to be reborn spiritually to see the Kingdom of God.  This is one of major highlighted parts of the bible where Christians declare their faith and undergo the ritual of baptism.

The Born Again story uses the idea of a spiritual rebirth as well as creating parallels with the Easter Story of Jesus's death and resurrection with that of Daredevil.

Thematic Parallels between Born Again and Bible
Chapter 3: Murdock stumbles through Hellskitchen like Jesus's walk to Golgatha.  He falls three times to represent the 3 falls of Jesus in the stations of the cross.
Chapter 4: After being beaten Murdock falls into the pose of the crucified Jesus Christ.  Daredevil's broken body is cradled by his mother Maggie in a similar image as that of the iconic Pieta or Lamentation pose.  Maggie here takes on a parallel with that of the Virgin Mary.
Chapter 5: Daredevil is shown standing in a large splash page, like the risen Christ.

Another hallmark of this story is that Matt Murdock does not don the Daredevil costume until the very end.

  • Kingpin
  • Nuke
  • Maggie

Born Again story summary:

Born Again begins with Karen Page falling into drug addiction.  Karen was the former girl friend and secretary of Matt Murdock and is one of the few people who knew his secret identity as Daredevil.  After leaving Nelson & Murdock she attempted to become an actress but after some early successes found herself unable to find work.  With her life in disarray she turned to heroine which plunged her even deeper into the darkness.  She eventually begins to make pornographic films in Mexico and eventually sells off Daredevil's secret identity.  The identity is sold up through an array of shady business men until it comes into the possession of the Kingpin.

The Kingpin sees this information as the ultimate way for him to break his foe.  He sets in motion a plan that sees IRS freeze Murdock's bank accounts, a bank foreclose on his appartment, a police lt Manolis testifies that Murdock brided a witness.  On top of all this Murdock's then girl friend Glorianna breaks up with him and begins dating his partner Foggy Nelson.

Murdock and Ben Urich begin to investigate Manolis to find out why the Lt would perjure himself to besmurch the name of Murdock.  They find that Manolis has a sick son and that he was bribed by medical treatments for his son.  Manolis is unwilling to give up who was behind framing of Murdock.

Part of the Kingpin's plan to get Daredevil arrested is foiled by spectatcular defense put up by Foggy Nelson however the Kingpin immediatly responds with violence and has the Murdock's appartment fire bombed.  He leaves the Daredevil costume in the wreckage revealing that his identity is know known by the underworld.  The Kingpin then orders for hits on anyone who knew about the Daredevil identity including Karen Page.  Karen barely manages to escape a hitman and ends up hitching a ride with an abusive porn fanatic.  Eventually, she is found and brought into safety by Foggy Nelson.

A homeless Murdock is hunted continually by Kingpin's men who give him constant updates on his mental state.  Finally this culminates in Murdock confronting Kingpin directly.  Kingpin beats Murdock to a pulp.  He then has him drenched in whisky, thrown in a stolen cab and pushed into the east river.  Murdock barely manages to regain conciousness and escape the car.  He stumbles through Hellskitchen and eventually collapses at the gym where his father trained.  This is where a broken Murdock his found by his mother Maggie.  Maggie is a nun at a local church and she brings Matt back and nurses him back to health.

The son of Manolis eventually succumbs to his illness and tells the Ben Urrich the truth of the Kingpin being behind the frame up.  However, a hit woman Nurse Lois kills Manolis so that Ben can hear the death on the other end of the phone.  Ben does not waiver and immediatly alerts the paper and the authorities.  The hit woman then tracks Ben but Daredevil intervenes and knocks her out and leaves her for the authorities.

Meanwhile the Kingpin has called on a super powered military killer named Nuke to kill Daredevil's friends while dressed as Daredevil.  Matt barely manages to get to Nelson's home in time to stop him from killing Foggy and Karen Page.  He thwarts the imposter.  Karen confesses to Matt that she sold his identity and begs for his forgivness.  Matt dismisses the need for forgivness saying he is beyond the need of physical possessions.  They move to an abandoned appartment and Matt helps her overcome her Heroin withdrawal while he supports them as a diner cook.

The moves of Ben Urrich and the capture of Nurse put the Kingpin temporarily on his heels. Nurse Lois agrees to testify against him but she is killed.

Unable to locate the hiding Murdock, the Kingpin sends Nuke to destroy the whole nieghborhood. He flies in on a Hellcoptier and begins shooting civilians and razing buildings. In the flames of the burning Hell's Kitchen, Matt redons the Daredevil costume and rises up to defeat the super powered assassin. Daredevil takes out the helicopter with a grenade launcher and then defeats Nuke.  The Avengers arrive and forcifully take Nuke into custody.  This angers Daredevil who was trying to extract a confession that the Kingpin was behind the attack.

Daredevil and Captain America both begin their own investigations into Nuke where they learn he is the last surviving member of a revived Project Rebirth. The Kingpin sends assassins after Nuke and he is killed just before Daredevil manages to reach him. Leaving Daredevil with no evidence to use against the crimelord. However Captain America finds one of the Hitmen sent after Nuke who confesses he was sent by the Kingpin. He also tells Captain America that the Kingpin was behind the assualt on Hellskitchen.

The Kingpin manages to fight off all charges but his public image is tarnished. Many of his managers and criminal leutenants begin to lose faith in him and leave his organization. Even though it was Captain America who brought him down, he still blames Daredevil and obsesses himself with the thought of killing him.

Murdock returns to life in Hell's Kitchen happy with his life. He resumes his relationship with Karen and his role as the protector of Hell's Kitchen as Daredevil.

Taco Bell celebrates Demolition Man

Demolition Man was 25 years ago really?  Dang I am getting old.  That means a whole lot of people out there are going to say.  What is Demolition Man and what does it have to do with Taco Bell.  If you have not seen Demolition Man then you really need to watch it, if only to learn what to do with those seashells (Some of you will get that joke).

Oh Yes and Nacho Fries are coming out and Taco Bell is not skimping on the promotion for them either:

Taco Bell also made a trailer to highlight the return of Nacho Fries:

Press Release
After making the biggest debut in Taco Bell history in January, the hugely popular Nacho Fries are back for a summer sequel, returning to menus July 12. To celebrate their return, Taco Bell will honor the 25th Anniversary of Warner Bros. Pictures’ action sci-fi film Demolition Man, and its prediction of a utopian future where “all restaurants are Taco Bell,” with a re-creation of the iconic restaurant from the movie.

“When you create a fake trailer for a fake movie for a real product that surpasses all expectations of products (and movie trailers), it seems inevitable that you have to create a sequel,” said Marisa Thalberg, Chief Brand Officer of Taco Bell Corp. “And what better way to tease this sequel, than pay homage to a real movie’s 25th anniversary - one that had a very compelling view of a fictional future?”

Demolition Man, a 1993 Warner Bros. Pictures’ cult-classic in its own right, gained fame for its utopian predictions of 2032 - where Taco Bell was the only restaurant to survive the Franchise Wars. But since the film’s release 25 years ago - one question remains unanswered: how?

Leading up to the July 12 return of Nacho Fries, answers will be revealed with exciting creative in the sequel to Web of Fries I. Culminating with a Demolition Man pop-up and a futuristic and upscale Taco Bell dining experience July 19 - 21 in San Diego just outside the holy-grail of science fiction. More details and sneak peeks into the experience to follow.

To prepare for Web of Fries II and the utopian future, fans are encouraged to follow along using the hashtag #NachoFries. Taco Bell is also offering fans the chance to watch the 1993 Demolition Man movie for free via FandangoNOW. From now until June 28, fans can catch up on the delicious future that the film predicted. FandangoNOW offers 70,000 new release and catalog movies, next-day TV shows, and an extensive library of 4K and HDR titles, to buy or rent -- no subscription required.

Nacho Fries will be available for a limited time a la carte for $1.29 and also served Supreme for $2.49 or BellGrande for $3.49, topped with classic Taco Bell add-ons including beef, nacho cheese sauce, tomatoes and sour cream and also in a $5 box with Nacho Fries, a Doritos® Locos Taco, a Beefy 5-Layer Burrito and Medium Drink.

A Pokemon Go resurgence?

Pokemon Go was huge over the summer of 2016.  The Toylab site that normally gets between 50k and 100k views a month at that time was getting a full 100k views just from posts on Pokemon Go.  In effect Pokemon doubled the amount of people coming into our blog.  That is crazy.  Now it became a challenge as to how we balanced our usual comic focused content along with Pokemon content.  Do you do 1 comic post and 1 Pokemon post.  How do you keep both group attracted.  The one thing in particular we did not want to do was lose our bread and butter fans.   At Toylab we had a lot of conversations on this issue but in the end it was good for us.  We opened ourselves to some new content and to an extent that has continued.  Now we have even begun adding other things whether it be cosplay or D&D.

Pokemon Go for us kept going strong through Dec 2016 and then began sharply declining until Feb 2016.   It still maintained some views just not the crazy amount of views and interest it was gleaning back in that summer 2016 period.
Some groups did begin noticing a decline in interest much earlier.

This chart I pulled from an old article at Business Insider shows that Google searches for Pokemon Go began petering out in August of 2016.  Now my one contention with this chart is my guesss is that Pokemon Go fans stopped searching for the generic "Pokemon Go" and began searching for things like How do I beat this Pokemon or Tips for Pokemon Go.  A general search for something tend to be higher as it begins but the searches refine to more niche based searches as time goes on.  None the less the chart does show that July surge accurately.

Either way you shake it though the Business Insider graph shows a pretty dismal view of longevity but here we are two years later discussing it.

At Toylab for 2017 through 2018 we have seen is that Pokemon Go searches have held at a lower but also steady level.  Generally, Toylab garners around 100 - 300 views a day on Pokemon Go related topics.  This is even without new Pokemon Go content coming out regularly.  Recently though we have noticed another surge in interest.

This surge is being noticed by others as well.  VentureBeat released data that came from a research firm called Superdata on Pokemon Go statistics.  The game in May 2018 made $104 Million an increase of 174% over May 2017.

A couple of things have occurred since May which would indicate that the App may be even bigger in June.  The game released Trading which is pretty hot.  Once again when I go to Pokemon Go locations there are crowds of trainers there.  There is also the simple fact that the game becomes more popular when the weather is warmer as its easier to walk around outside when your not trudging through snow.

Trading was definitely a big deal and the system they designed for it is impressive.

Pokemon Go Trading is HERE

I also think that the upcoming Lets Go Pikachu Game could lead to yet an even bigger and perhaps larger spike.

Lets Go Pikachu connects to Pokemon Go

Wait did I just find a semi sneaky way of plugging two of my older posts?  Of course I did ;)

How long will this game last? That is a really good question.

Its hard to say.  Pokemon has an element of a sport or competitive event that can keep people interested for long periods of time.  The biggest weakness I see is that primary goal of Pokemon is to catch Pokemon so the developer must continually release new Pokemon variants to keep interest up.

What is the Baxter Building?

The Baxter Building is a fictional building in the Marvel universe that has long been known as the home of the Fantastic Four.

First Appearance: Fantastic Four #3

Address:  42nd Street and Madison Ave, New York City

The Baxter Building is 35 stories tall.  Its top 5 stories are owned to the super human team the Fantastic Four.  The rest of the building is ordinary residential apartments and businesses.  There is a mechanical area called the buffer room between the Fantastic Four top floors and the other floors.  The buffer zone helps eliminate sounds and vibrations emanating from the super team and Mr Fantastic's wild experiments.

The building was one of the first buildings in the world to use a special form of reinforcement called K bracing.  This heavily reinforced structure is on reason it was selected to be the head quarters of the Fantastic Four.  The reinforcement is strong enough that the building could laid by on a corner and not collapse.

Early in its use the Landlord was excited for the publicity of having the super human celebrities the Fantastic Four move in.  However, the landlord began to regret this decision after a variety of Super Villains began targeting the building.  After Doctor Doom launched the building into space, Mister Fantastic was forced to purchase the entire building to avoid eviction.

Preview of Legenderry Red Sonja #5

Dynamite's steam punk themed Red Sonja saga continues.  How will she defeat the evil Gath and his plan to use the dark gods to reach ascendancy?

I was some what skeptical of a Steam Punk version of Red Sonja but I have to say its working as both an artistic perspective and as a theme for her stories.  In particular I think there is a bit of a lack of Steam Punk stories and that makes this title a nice addition to comic book shelves.

Joe Benitez of Lady Mechanica fame also leads the stellar cover to the series which is amazing.
