Who is Agent 33? Agents of SHIELD

Who is Agent 33?

Agent 33 will appear in episode 3 of Season 2 of Agents of SHIELD.  She will be played by actress Maya Strojan.

In episode 3 Agent 33 is held captive by the Kraken who brain washes her throughout the episode.   It is not clear exactly what the Kraken wants with her but she must be important to demand this much effort.  Perhaps, she knows more about the obelisk or those that took it.

Agent 33 then infiltrates SHIELD using a special mask that gives her the face of Agent May.  She is found out and ends up battling the real agent May.  During their struggle, Agent 33 face is badly burned with electricity.  The burned mask is bonded to her face and she is forced to wear it.

In Midseason Finale, Daniel Whitehall appears to be slain.  Agent 33 and Grant Ward leave together away from the SHIELD forces.

Comic Version:
Agent 33 has only appeared in 3 comics.  She appeared in Hercules and the Heart of Chaos where she recruits Hercules for a mission for SHIELD.

Real Name:
Kara Lynn Palama

Agent 33

In the comics Agent 33 is a  SHIELD historian and researcher who specializes in Greek Mythology.  Nick Fury tasks Agent 33 with recruiting demi-god Hercules to battle the Greek god of War Ares.

Does Agent 33's appearance mean that Hercules could also appear on the show?  It is certainly possible.  It may hint that the Agents at the very least have need of specialist in history and research which opens up quite a few interesting doors in the Marvel Universe.  Perhaps, she could even shed some light on the legends surrounding Skye's origin.

If Skye is an Inhuman she could be researcher of their history.

Manara and the right of free speech

John Locke a cool dude, he liked these things we call rights
I have been attacked by a few people who say that because the government has not censored the Manara covers and in this case Marvel (a private company) decided to cancel the covers that talk of Freedom of Speech and Artistic Freedom are erroneous.

Implying that our rights legal or natural only apply to the relationship between an individual and his/her government.

This is a dangerously, shallow view that all censorship, and all attacks on our freedoms come from the government.  The social contract between the people and the government involve what are called "Political" rights.  If the government is functioning well it not only will not attack the rights of its citizens and it will also act to protect rights from private individuals, entities or groups who wish to take them away.

The threat of censorship is thus not only from government but also from private ones.
If for example there were a group that wore white hoods and wanted to intimidate people of another skin color from voting.  The government's job would not be to simply sit back and say hey we are not blocking your right to vote, this is cool.  NO the government's job would be to step in and PROTECT the right being imposed on.
Keep in mind numerous private groups such as the precursor to the NAZIs the SA (Brownshirts) have successfully bullied away people's rights bit by bit.
Now I am not calling for the government to intervene in this case.  If the Manara haters were attacking shipments, stealing and burning his works,....I would absolutely call for government intervention.
The Manara haters are however trying to limit what I see, they are trying to intimidate, and coerce so that there views of what is acceptable are forced on me and everyone else.

It is my duty and the duty of all who want to see the widest range of artistic freedom available,e to say...No.  If you don't like it, don't buy it, but there is no need to bully an industry to print only what you want and prevent it from printing something for someone else.  Marvel in this case provided alternative covers, this cover is actually a rare variant.

Further there are already restrictions by the government from use of the comic code on what we can see in comics.  Do you really want to restrict this further?  The Manara Haters are effectively making a new dotted line on the material that will be "ok" with them, around the already existing hard line set by the government.

You start a movement to limit freedom, I'll start a movement to protect it, lets see who hits harder.  Your dotted line, is not "ok" with me.  I want to walk into a store where artists have a full pallet of ideas to work with.  I will not like many comics I see, some may even offend me, but I will have the freedom to choose and they will have the freedom to create.

Update on Manara's canceled covers - Marvel backtracks further

Manara cover of Uncanny Avengers 8
Comic Book Resources (CBR) reported that Marvel's Editor in Chief Axel Alonso is reporting that the Manara covers for Thor 2 (Featuring the new female Thor) and Avengers & X-Men Axis #1 were canceled but not due to the controversy created by the Marysue.  Alonso claims that the covers were canceled due to Scheduling conflicts with Manara.

Marvel bows down to mob and throws Manara covers into the fire

I look at this comment and say.........YEAH RIGHT.  If you are going to bow down to a mob at least have the stones to come out and be honest about it.  I can think of very few times where covers are canceled like this.  Does Manara really have conflicting projects for a bigger name than Marvel?
This excuse insults the intelligence of all comic fans.

Marvel is trying to ease the tensions of the mob.  They want to brand themselves as the pro female & pro diversity comic company and the new Thor book is critical to that image.  They are making a female Thor who won't be called She Thor or Lady Thor but just Thor.  She will carry the hammer of Thor.  I have fully supported this move and think it will be a lot of fun.  The company though behind closed doors has obviously thought well not let this Manara controversy tarnish are big female power bash.

You can read my previous posts on the female Thor here:
Thor #25 Preview first appearance of female Thor!

I see this as weak, and cowardly.

If I were Marvel I would change the commission of Manara's cover.  I would make it of a female Thor with a shirt that says "I can be sexy if I want to" and giving the bird to writers of the Marysue who would be dressed as Gestapo.

That is the attitude of a bold Marvel that stands up for the first amendment and artistic freedom that I support.

Always be skeptical of those who want to control what you are allowed to hear, see and read....ALWAYS.

History repeat itself.

SPOILERS - Hidden gems in Agents of SHIELD Season 2

Did you catch the Black Panther Easter Egg? Read on!

There were lot of hidden gems in the premiere and I am not sure if I even caught them all.
Review of Season 2 AoS Premiere

1) Peggy Carter and GH 325
The seen with Peggy Carter and the Howling Commandos was full of interesting things.  It showed the commandos going after what they believed was the last of the Hydra base.  Introduced us to Daniel Whitehall AKA Kraken who will be the season's "Big Bad".  Provided some background on the very first 0-8-4 which seems to be very important.  Also showed the reasoning and beginning of an organization called the SSR a SHIELD precursor.  The Red Skull and Howard Stark are also name dropped in this sequence.

However the real doozy in the scene went by very fast.
Peggy Carter scene reveals origins of GH 325 and Blue Alien

2) Triplett
Agent Triplett goes in disguise as a General.  The name he is uses is "General Jones"  this is an obvious reference to the potential linkage between Triplett and howling commando Gabe Jones.  Marvel still has not said directly that
Who is Antoinne Triplett? News and Speculation
Triplett's grandfather a Howling Commando?

3) Skye's Father
Ward has become entirely focused on Skye and specifically who her father is.  Rainna apparently told him more about who exactly Skye's father is.  What ever the answer is here it seems important enough for it to become Ward's reason to exist.  In his dark Hannibal Lecter cell, Ward seems to only concern himself with this topic.
Is this due to feelings for Skye and caring for her?
Does he have ulterior motives for wanting to meet Skye's father?  Could Ward have a connection to him?

There was no sign of Rainna or Skye's father in this episode but I have no doubt they are out there somewhere.

Is Skye's father the evil Maximus the Mad?
Who Are Skye's Parents #1
Is Skye an Inhuman?

4) 0-8-4 and the Markings

The 0-8-4 metal object that seems to alter any organic matter it touches also has the markings that Coulson/Garrett were drawing.  The 0-8-4 is also directly connected to the blue body in the crate.  Perhaps, the 0-8-4 holds the key to unlock the puzzling symbols that have appeared through out the show.
Kree Circle Writing and Cosmic Awareness

The Obelisk also seems to be tied to Skye's father and Raina.  Could it be the item that alters Inhumans the way Terrigen does in the comics?
What is the Obelisk? is it related to Terrigen?

5) Future of Lance Hunter and Isabelle Hartley
In a surprise twist Agent Hartley played by Lucy Lawless seemed to die.  Boom Pow bye bye.  This feel very much like the Steven Seagal death in the movie Executive Decision.  Steven Seagal was heavily used in the promotion of the movie but his character is barely in the movie and dies in the first five minutes.  This is a comic book show, and in comic books no one interesting stays dead.  This makes me wonder if Hartley could return perhaps as a villain out to get revenge for losing her arm.

Lance Hunter was a very interesting character in that he is very out of the mold of the other agents.  He care primarily about money and is not into following rules.  I am curious if he ends up becoming more like his comic counterpart who leads a British organization called STRIKE.
Interestingly the Winter Soldier Captain America's elite group that was headed by Rumlow (Crossbones) was also called Strike.  Could Lance Hunter have been in that group?  He could very well be a Hydra double agent if that is the case.

We know that Coulson was talking to someone in London.  Which character could that be?

6) Black Panther an ally of SHIELD?

There have been at least 3 Black Panther Easter Eggs in Season 2 so far.

A) In the 2nd episode - Heavy is the Head  General Talbot mentions operation Panther Klaw - this seems to be a reference to Black Panther and the Panther's nemesis the evil villain Klaw.

B) Also in the 2nd episode - Raina gives the Absorbing Man a metal that she describes as super strong and coming from the stars.  It sounds an awful lot like Vibranium.
For more info see --> What is Vibranium / Carbine?

C)  In the premiere - Coulson showed a map with locations of allies he is talking to.  There is one location in Africa which matches up to the mythical location of Black Panther's home, Wakanda.

I actually think Wakanda is shown but I think at least in the MCU it has been shown in the eastern part of Africa south of Sudan and Ethiopia.  Notice there is a blue light in this area of Africa as well.

In this Map Wakanda is in Blue

7) Other characters and groups on the map:
What really becomes interesting about the map is that all of the lights potentially represent a character or an organization in the Marvel universe.

Who are the lights in Alaska?  Who is the one in  Canada, there are 2 in California, a few in England, one in Berlin, 2 in Brazil, one in Paris, one in Alexandria, one in South Africa, one in Israel, one in Saudi Arabia, one in Moscow, one in....the Himalayas?

The Himalayas makes me think of both the Inhumans, and the Iron Fist city of Kun Lun.  Kun Lun is said to be on the highest mountain in the Kun Lun mountain range that are in Tibet.

Moonknight could be the light in Egypt.

Westcoast Avengers - LA

Alpha Flight - Canada

The organization called the Chaste who train both Daredevil and Elektra are also said to be on a mountain but this mountain is never to my knowledge identified.  We know that Stick the leader of the Chaste has already been cast in the upcoming Daredevil series.  So the Chaste do exist in the MCU.

What other characters / organizations do you think could be represented on this map?

8) Doctor Faustus
Doctor Faustus was mentioned as the creator of the brain washing method being used by the Kraken.

Spoilers: First look at Mockingbird on Agents of SHIELD

Bobbi Morse AKA Mockingbird is set to appear in a episode titled, "A Hen in the Wolf House".  She will be played by Adrianne Palicki.  Entertainment Weekly has released the first picture of her in action on the show.
From the picture you can tell that Bobbi Morse has infiltrated Hydra as she is dressed in a Hydra uniform.

Backlash over Manara Spiderwoman cover leads to Censorship

A variant cover for Spiderwoman #1  was attacked by self described feminists at the website the Marysue.  The issue garnered massive national/international exposure with people attacking the sexuality of the pose of Spiderwoman, her anatomy, and whether it was possible for her to be in that pose.

 The Mary Sue

Dan Slott came to Manara's defense but this seems like it was too late.

Dan Slott variant debate

Manara himself even responded with a drawing of Spiderwoman from a different angle.

Translated Response from Milo
“Given that some people have seen, or pretended to see, my Spider-Woman in a gynaecological position, I’m sending this sketch to show how, from another angle, it is a posture that has a sense that is not necessarily erotic or pornographic . I would be grateful if you could incorporate this sketch into the debate.”

Newsarama is reporting that Marvel has now canceled two covers that were to be done by artist Milo Manara.  Both the covers of Avengers & X-Men: Axis #1 and Thor #2 have now been canceled.

Effectively the PC police who attacked Manara and Marvel have won.

I have been silent on this issue in part because I go back and forth on this particular cover.  I don't think it is so terrible that it should have elicited this kind of reaction.  I can think of a few thousand covers that I have seen that our worse.  The fact that there are others does not make this cover right or wrong but I do think Manara is taking an usually large whack for what has been common marketing in the industry for the past 60 years.  I don't think the pose of Spiderwoman shown here is any different from poses used by Spider-Man on a 100 or so covers.    On the Spiderman covers though the difference would be his cheeks would not be quite so pronounced.

As a father of two daughters I certainly try to be aware of how women are depicted in all forms of media.  We often use characters from TV shows, books and movies as ways of discussing life situations and our family's values.  We have watched Miley Cyrus go from cute tween to booty twerking, tongue dragging rock chick.  As a parent you have to discuss these things.

That said I don't spend a great deal of time worrying about Miley, sex symbols like Kate Upton, and sexy comic girl covers.  I spend much more time worrying about the rail thin anorexic models that are unhealthy and are used as body image targets for young girls, and the whole culture of slut shaming.

On body image I would rather my daughter look at this cover of a big booty, muscular Spiderwoman than look at ANY and  EVERY fashion runway model.  Spider-Woman here looks healthy, I can't remember the last time I saw a run way model that I did not want to hand a cheeseburger to.

The contrary view of this is that Spider-Woman looks "Slutty".  As mentioned before I hate the idea around slut shaming.  First off, every girl (and guy) wears something at one point or another that may have been a mistake.  Everyone sometimes wears something that might make them feel wanted, or feel better.  Being in middle school, high school and being young in general is not easy and sometimes "gasp" girls wear something that leans toward the provocative.  Perhaps, it is a trendy outfit, perhaps it makes her feel cute, it typically has a lot to do with how she feels and not a whole lot about her personal values.  So in short I think the idea of full on judging someone and calling them trash "Slut" "whore" etc based off of an outfit is ridiculous and cruel.  We have rules on what my daughters wear and we monitor it, but we never allow them to mouth off and label other girls.....ever.  That crap is for the Taliban and apparently the Marysue.

The whole idea of slut shaming feeds into the defense of rapists that the girl deserves such and such actions due to how she dresses.  I say that is awful terrible culture and I full on despise it.

The so called feminists at the Marysue on this issue basically said Spiderwoman was not readable character because she was sexual ie a slut.  They were essentially using the same argument of slut shamers they supposedly abhore.

Is there room for good looking or "sexual" characters in comics?  Are you saying every female character that strikes a pose in what you deem as sexual is not worthy of reading?

Really?  Do you really want to open  that door?  Because I seem to remember some movies with these male characters doing similar things and doing pretty damn well.

Do I mind that Marvel is selling movies to girls with hot guys who are shirtless for usually no reason.

Not at all.

Am I distraught because they promote an anatomy that is nearly impossible for me to live up to.

Not at all.

Why?  Well lets just start here.  We are humans not angels and despite what the puritanical forefathers of America thought sex is part of our lives, and our thoughts.  Sex has its place and it is OK.  It is OK in movies, it is OK magazines, it is OK on TV and it is OK in comics. At any given second 4 billion people are looking up sex related topics on the internet.  EVERY SECOND.

Obviously America has semi-agreed upon standards and ratings and when something crosses a certain threshold we want parents to know, and something can be limited to certain age groups.  Did the Spiderwoman Cover in question cross that threshold?  No freaking way.

It is about Censorship
Here to me is the bigger and sadder part of this.  A voice, a creative person has been silenced from doing work because some one, some where was offended.

There are always going to be people offended, and for a long time Marvel has stood up to them.  I am very disturbed by them caving on this issue.  Letting the mob censor you, it is just as bad as the government censoring you.  We need to live in a world that has a tougher skin.  Are there some really disgusting ideas that we should censor by boycotting? yes I can think of a few.  Spiderwoman crawling with her booty up as she crosses over a roof does not fall into this category at ALL!

People's heads are being cut off with dull knives.....we censor an artist because he drew a sexy Spiderwoman.

Girls are being kidnapped by the 100s and considered sluts, made into slaves based off their religion......we censor an artist because he drew a sexy Spiderwoman.

There is irony here.

The truth is I bet the Manara Thor #2 cover would have been awesome and now we will never have it.

Here are some other Marvel covers by Manara for those curious.  You do need to be careful searching for Manara covers because he has done a lot of work that falls into the adult genre.  His work is not exclusive to the adult genre nor should any artist be forced to be stuck in one genre.  Manara has his own aesthetic, and I think it is a style that is worthy of being on a comic shelf.

I would never force anyone to buy a comic with a Manara Cover, but  you should have the right to buy one if you want to.

I personally do not own any Manara covers but am tempted to go onto Ebay and just start buying them like mad as a counter protest.

Look at his covers and ask yourself.  Did the Marysue have a good enough point to censor this guy, or did they just write an article designed to be click bait and make money.  I know who I am mad at...and it is not Manara.

Marvel has responded about the Manara Cover cancellations, read about what I think about their response below:

Marvel brings out the fireworks to Agents of SHIELD Season 2 Premiere

During Season 1 of Agents of SHIELD the show was widely criticized for setting up plot lines too slowly, having static characters, and lacking any of the major characters of the movies.  Effectively, Agents of SHIELD was a weak shell of the Marvel Universe seen in the movies.  About midway through the season the episodes became faster paced, and more intriguing.  The older characters grew more complex and a hero from the comics Deathlok began appearing regularly.  At the end of the season the intrigue hit an all time high when it was revealed that the evil Hydra had infiltrated SHIELD.  These episodes were tied into the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier and suddenly the shared universe concept seemed to find its footing.  The last episodes were like a sudden explosion, like a detonation of excitement had finally gone off.

Looking toward the Premiere episode the question remains which Agents of SHIELD will show up.  The plodding show of Season 1 beginning, or the exciting, edge of your seat ride of Season 1's end?

I am happy to say the premiere had more octane to it than almost all of Season 1.  Within minutes there is action, introduction of new intriguing characters.  On top of this the episode features a major villain in the Absorbing Man.  Very few actual super villains have appeared in the show up until this point so seeing a villain that has battled the likes of Thor and Hulk was amazing.

The entire tone of the show feels more visceral, dangerous and action packed.  They lack resources of the former SHIELD and are being hunted by General Talbot of the US military.   This situation means less bureaucracy and more fugitive hit and run missions.

 Who is the Absorbing Man?
Who is Kraken?

In addition to Absorbing Man the show also introduced its new big bad, the Kraken, who seemed terrifying.  Really this episode from beginning to end really sets up how interesting this villain is, there is more to him than meets than meets the eye.

The new agents were also all dynamic.  Lucy Lawless added instant spice and action as agent Hartley.  Lance Blood was also interesting. I would say both characters opened up new questions particularly on who Coulson should use as allies.  I will say that something involving these characters really really surprised me, but I will try to avoid giving away too much.

The premiere also provided interesting clues on the mysteries of Coulson's resurrection  and what the mysterious symbols seen in Season 1 were.  We also catch a glimpse of Ward who no doubt will play a part in the rest of the season.  He seems very diabolical and almost Hannibal Lector esq locked in the confines of SHIELD.

What really become intriguing though is who is Skye's villainous father.  Ward seems to know.
Is Skye's father the evil Maximus the Mad?
Who Are Skye's Parents #1
Is Skye an Inhuman?
As if the show needed even more it contained an awesome sequence that showed Peggy Carter and two howling commandos.  This scene for me was a cherry on top of an awesome show.

In the end, the show was great but left a lot of questions open and me wanting even more.

Good job Agents! Bravo this season is off to a great start.

Analyzing Grant Ward

Grant Ward went from being a fairly boring character to the most interesting on the show, when it was revealed he was Hydra agent.  More interesting was the fact that this had been very well set up through out the season.  At the end of the season Ward is left in the custody of Coulson's team and his future is very uncertain.  Will he redeem himself or become the ultimate villain?  What does he want?

5 Reasons to watch the Agents of SHIELD Season 2 Premiere!
New SHIELD comic to focus on characters from the show

Lets look at Ward's actions throughout Season 1:

Pilot - Ward is interviewed Maria Hill for the position. Ward complains about working with a team and seems to only reluctantly agree to join.  Now we know that Ward's reluctance was a ploy to remove suspicion from him.  His mission all along was to infiltrate the team for the Clairvoyant agent John Garrett.

0-8-4 - Ward takes over training of new recruit Skye.  In this way gaining her trust and clouding her emotions on him from her perspective.

FZZT - Ward heroically saves Simmons by dramatically jumping out of a plane.  This once again is a calculated move used to cloud her judgement of him.

The Hub - Ward's heroism makes Fitz jealous.  The mission in the Hub with him and Fitz allows for the two to bond and form a bromance.  These actions allow for Ward to either remove Fitz or earn his trust.

The Well - A very Ward focused episode.  First we learn that Ward's worse memory is him being forced by his older brother to stand by and do nothing while his younger brother is drowning in a well.  This event is key point in what later drives Ward to try to burn down his home with his brother and father inside.

Ward also begins a physical relationship with Melinda May.  The objective again being to cloud her judgement on him.

At this point of time Ward has taken significant actions to remove doubt of his loyalty to all members of the team.

Yes Men
Lorelei takes over Ward and reveals portions of his true nature.  She reveals that he really does not have feeling for May, but he does have feelings for Skye.  This ends his relationship with May.

End of the Beginning
Ward kills the patse Clairvoyant eliminating any possibility for an interrogation.  He claims this was done to protect Skye but was really an attempt to stop the investigation into the Clairvoyant.

Turn Turn Turn - Pivotal episode where the Hydra sleeper agents begin to take over SHIELD.  In the end of the episode Ward shoots and seemingly kills Victoria Hand and frees John Garrett form SHIELD custody.

The Only Light in The Darkness
Ward kills Agent Koenig, and captures Skye to bring the Clairvoyant.  Skye learns his true nature and sets up a message to the group to let them know of Ward's true allegiance.

We learn that Ward was broken out of prison by John Garrett and summarily trained to be an independent cold hearted killer.  It is still unclear exactly what Ward wants from the relationship.  I presume it is a chance to get vengeance on his family.  Ward is shown to be unable to kill his pet dog hinting at perhaps a small amount of good him.

Ward drops Fitz and Simmons into the ocean in a cell seemingly to their deaths.

The Beginning of the End
Ward and John Garrett are beaten by the Agents.  During the episode we increasingly see Ward beginning to question and lose trust in Garrett.  It is clear that he is not loyal to Hydra.  It also seems the major want of Ward is to reconnect with Skye.  Lorelei previously mentioned that he had real feeling for Skye.  Ward also has more information on Skye after talking to Rainna and learning more about the legend around her origins.

Overall Analysis:
At the end of the season it seems that Ward's primary desire has become Skye.  However, what is the carrot used by Garrett to keep Ward so loyal before that?  Is it simply the chance to be free of his family?  It seems there is a part of the story missing here.  I think Ward was offered the chance to get vengeance on his brother.  There seems to be more story here and I expect for us to see much more of Ward in the future.

Facts we Know:
  • Ward cares for Skye
  • Ward does have some good in him.  Illustrated by his failure to kill his pet dog.
  • Ward is not loyal to Hydra but to John Garrett.  The reasons behind this are still unclear.
  • He is somewhat distraught at Garrett's descent into madness
  • His take over of the team was extremely well thought out and methodical with his only hitch being his development of feelings for Skye.  While the team will not trust him at all, he did prove his capabilities of being a top tier agent.
Looking at this, I think it is highly likely that Ward will in someway redeem himself.  The scene with the dog in particular had the purpose of showing that there was still good inside him.
