Toylab Highlights:

One cool thing about this event so far is how responsive the creators are being with Marvel fans.
Cullen Bunn has been responding to people on twitter on ready who use the #MonstersUnleashed hash tag.  He has been taking recommendations for giant monsters to be included in the event.

Other notes from chat:
Monsters under 7 stories like Frankenstein or Werewolf by Night will not be included in the series.

Classic massive monsters will be used as well as new creations.

Important heroes in the series includes Lunella aka Moon Girl, Monster Hunter Elsa Bloodstone and Captain America.

Tone of the event is said to be more fun that previous massive events.

  • Were there any plot or character pitfalls Cullen wanted to avoid? You have to be careful when you deal with monsters like this. He didn't want the monsters to come across as jokes. Some of them are humorous at times and they have personalities, but the most important thing was that the readers take these creatures seriously.

  • Focusing on the creatures, will any of them stick around, and will whatever solution the heroes come up with have a role in the Marvel u going forward?

  • Will past monster stories be touched on? They're really looking at creating a unified new direction. They don't spend much time on the past, as Cullen wanted to make this very new reader friendly.

  • How is Cullen gearing himself to the artist's strengths? When he wrote the scripts, he didn't necessarily write one issue thinking "this is a Greg Land issue, this is a Kubert issue." He did talk with them to see which monsters each artist gravitated towards, so it was mostly about giving them the monsters they were most excited to draw.

  • The one-shots are built so they don't interrupt the ongoing books, similar to what we did with Age of Ultron tie-ins a few years back.

  • Will the event leak into other ongoing series? No. It's self-contained, and if you enjoy the main series there will be 7 or 8 one-shots starring key characters on the side.

  • What do they hope readers walk away from the book with? Mark says they'll have a real appreciation for the classic monsters, and see how cool the new monsters are and how they fit in. Axel says he hopes people just come out gasping. There are many many times where the heroes need a bigger boat, referencing Jaws.

  • Who are the breakout stars, and are there any Cullen would like to continue with after the event? There are a couple of spoilers that Cullen can't reveal. Captain America plays a big role, but then so does Moon Girl, who's the smartest person in the MU and also tied to a classic monster (Devil Dinosaur)

  • Will the monsters have distinct personalities? Cullen feels it's important--in some of the classic stories, these monsters have big personalities. "You'll definitely see some inter-monster politicking, I guess." - Cullen

  • Is Cullen adding to the backstory of the monsters in the historical Marvel sense? The series will definitely add to the mythology and adds some new players. More importantly, after this story the classic Marvel monsters are big players in the Marvel Universe.

  • Will this unify the heroes after Civil War II? The heroes have to response decisively and quickly, there isn't time for them to quibble. At least for this period of time, the heroes HAVE to act together. Leaders will quickly rise to the top and take charge.
