William Talltrees is born in Wolf Point, Montana. He is the son of the Cheyenne tribal elder Thomas Talltrees. Thomas has told his son many stories of the legendary Red Wolf of old. William sees the criminal Cornelius Van Lunt and his thug Jason Birch attempt to intimidate his father into selling property. Thomas refuses the deal. That night henchmen from Van Lunt kill all the members of the family excluding William.
William swears vengeance and dons the ceremonial garb of the Red Wolf. The spirit Owayodata visits him and bestows on him the super powers of the Red Wolf. He also finds a wolf companion named Lobo. The two set out to get revenge. He follows Van Lunt and Birch back to New York City. He joins forces with the Avengers and takes down Van Lunt and Birch.
Red Wolf then battles the Hulk along with 4 other Western heroes (Firebird, Texas Twister, Shooting Star, and Phantom Rider III). The group of heroes forms a Super Group called the Rangers. This group then falls under the influence of a demon inhabiting the body of Shooting Star. Under demonic influence they battle the West Coast Avengers.
Red Wolf helps to prevent the gods of the Cheyenne from seeking vengeance along with Black Crow and Doctor Strange.
He joins the 50 State initiative in the story of Civil War.
In Secret Invasion his wolf Lobo turns out to be Skrull imposter and the two battle.

Red Wolf ongoing series (2015):
There is going to be a new Red Wolf ongoing series coming out in December 2015. Red Wolf will be written by Nathan Edmondson and artist Dalibor Talajic. Covers for the series will be done by Native American artist Jeffrey Veregge.
Veregge spoke about Red Wolf's uniqueness as a Native hero.
"There's not a character like Red Wolf out there right now,"... "As a native, I’m really excited to see that he can do things, he can figure out things and stand with Captain America and hold his own in this universe. That’s what’s awesome about it: You have all these characters of different nationalities and ethnicities, but it’s not all about their culture. It’s about them being a hero."The writer of the series Nathan Edmundson explained that Red Wolf would not be part of any real tribe but from a fictional one. The fictional tribe will however be based off real ones.
"Nobody should go to this looking as its historical," ... "He comes from another dimension, after all. But it's very important for us to approach it in as authentic a way as possible. Jeffery offers this, and not just for consultation, but with his creative input — his covers jump out from 100 feet away."
